Taveta War Graves & Memorials
A place of remembrance and reflection
Approximately 7 km from Relax Eden Gardens
Taveta contains several historic military cemeteries and memorial sites associated with the First World War. The Taveta Military Cemetery contains Commonwealth burials from the 1914–1918 war. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records 188 Commonwealth burials from the First World War, including nine unidentified burials at the cemetery. The cemetery is particularly significant because Taveta changed hands during the East African Campaign. German forces occupied Taveta in August 1914, and British forces retook the town in March 1916. The cemetery subsequently became an important burial site for casualties from the surrounding battlefields and military hospitals. A visit provides a quiet opportunity to learn about the people who lost their lives during the conflict and to reflect on Taveta's place in global history.

Discover Taveta's military history
Approximately 35–45 km from Relax Eden Gardens

For visitors, Maktau provides a fascinating opportunity to understand how railways, military strategy and the surrounding landscape shaped the history of the region.
A historic centre of faith, education and healthcare
Approximately 80 km from Relax Eden Gardens
Important: Bura Main Station is in the outskirts of Taveta, in present day mwatate Taita-Taveta county
Bura Mission has a history dating back to the 1890s. Missionaries travelling inland towards the Kilimanjaro region established Bura as an important halfway point. On 18 October 1892, Chief Mbogholi granted land for the mission, and the mission hospital followed during the early development of the site. The main church, Our Lady of Good Hope, was completed in 1896, with its first service celebrated on 30 September that year. Bura Mission also has a direct connection to the First World War. When the mission was closed in 1914, a military hospital was established there to treat Indian and African troops during the East African Campaign. Today, its history connects missionary work, healthcare, education, religion and wartime history, making it a particularly interesting heritage excursion.
